George H. Deike, Jr. Research Grants
The objective of the Deike Research Grant is to promote innovative research of high scholarly merit. The award will be made annually to a tenure-track faculty member in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Faculty members with the academic rank of professor, associate professor, or assistant professor are eligible for nomination. Each George H. Deike, Jr. Research Grant will be held for a period of three years.
The award recipient will receive $50,000 annually from the George H. Deike, Jr. Research Endowment Fund. These funds may be used for research expenses, travel and fieldwork expenses, graduate assistant stipends, or equipment purchases and maintenance. Unspent balances at the end of the award period will be returned to the fund for reallocation.
Nominations
One nominee may be submitted from each EMS Department and each of the College's interdisciplinary research institutes.
Nomination documents should include:
- Title page including name, rank, department affiliation;
- Summary of proposed research, limited to one page and written for nonspecialists;
- Narrative of three pages or less in which the problem is defined, the need, value or significance of the work is indicated, and the research plan is broadly outlined;
- Complete vita, including related publications and experience; and
- Proposed budget including fringe benefits and tuition.
Submission
The proposal should be submitted electronically to the Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Research (emsresearch@ems.psu.edu) no later than February 15th.
Proposal Evaluation
Proposals will be evaluated using the following factors:
- Overall scientific and/or technical merits of the proposal;
- Innovativeness of the research;
- Qualifications, capabilities and experience of the proposer;
- Adequacy of facilities and equipment to accomplish the research;
- Proposer's record of past performance; and
- Reasonableness and realism of the proposed costs.
The final selection will be based on the committee's recommendation and programmatic considerations.
Award Ceremony
The award will be presented at the Wilson Awards Banquet held each spring.
