Call for Nominations for EESI Environmental Scholars
Nominations Due: Feb 15 - (late nominations considered)

As announced last spring, EESI is now providing tuition waivers and stipend support (RAs) for EMS graduate students in interdisciplinary environmental sciences who qualify as EESI Environmental Scholars. A call for nominations will go out every winter at this time, seeking graduate students that are entering graduate programs as of 2009. For this Call, we seek to provide funding support specifically to help EESI associates attract excellent students to come to Penn State. In May/June, we will send out another Call for Nominations to provide similar support for students who are already at Penn State.

RA support is available for students entering EMS programs in 08/09.
Only EESI associates can currently nominate students.
We may occasionally break both of those rules as circumstances warrant.

Student nominees must be already accepted into one of the degree-granting programs within EMS or an interdepartmental graduate program (e.g. Materials, Ecology).  The student’s essay should mention interest in environmental research. We especially seek to fund students who advance some of our strategic goals:

1)      Students who increase the diversity of environmental science within our college

2)      Students who work across environmental disciplines and with more than one advisor

3)      Students who are working on areas promoted by the EESI Strategic Plan (http://www.eesi.psu.edu/resources/stratplan.pdf), including (but not necessarily limited to) sensor technologies and observational environmental science, earth system ecology, aerosol science, paleoclimatology, human-environment interactions, e-education, high-performance computing and data intensive science

4)      Students who help promote collaborative work with Univ of Puerto Rico faculty

5)      Students interested in using 3D visualization technologies in their research

6)      Students who work with both EESI fixed term and tenureline faculty

7)      Students working with advisors who are untenured but tenure line

Nominations, consisting of two parts as per below, should be sent to Debbie Lambert (lambert@eesi.psu.edu) by email by Feb 15 AS ONE PDF DOCUMENT THAT includes:

1)      Letter of nomination for the student written by a future possible advisor (the EESI associate) extolling the virtues of the student and any other pertinent details

2)      Complete pdf packet of the student’s application to a graduate program at Penn State (eg, transcripts, letters, essay by student, etc.)

Recipients will be reviewed by the EESI Advisory committee and/or the Director of EESI.  It is our intent that once we have chosen these Scholars, the home departments/programs or advisors can write the student and let them know (as a recruiting tool) that they have been awarded an EESI Environmental Scholarship to fund their first year or first semester at Penn State.
