EESI Associates Alley and Kasting Earn National Recognition
Richard Alley and Jim Kasting, both EESI associates, recently were recognized for their scientific achievements and contributions by prestigious national organizations.
Alley, the Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences, has been elected a Member of the National Academy of Sciences for his work in glaciology, both the behavior of ice sheets and their climate record. Election to the National Academy of Sciences is one of the highest honors awarded to scientists.
Alley, along with several other Penn State earth scientists, served on the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the 2007 Nobel Prize with Al Gore. His other awards and honors include election as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and recipient of the 2008 Milton S. Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching given by Penn State.
Also a professor of geosciences, Kasting was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and selected as a Fellow of the Geochemical Society. His research on planetary evolution and the development of the earth’s atmosphere is considered groundbreaking.
Kasting’s other honors include appointment as Distinguished Professor and election as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union.
